Triple E Awards 2023 28-6-23

28 June 2023

The University of Strathclyde has been named European Entrepreneurial University of the Year at the Triple E Awards in Barcelona.

The University scooped the title for its sector-leading ‘Entrepreneurship for All’ approach to offering all of its students, staff and alumni the opportunity to develop an entrepreneurial mindset through 1-2-1 support and a diverse range of training, funding and workshops.

The Triple E Awards are organised by the Accreditation Council for Entrepreneurial and Engaged Universities (ACCEU) and were announced at the 2023 ACEEU Forum and 2023 Triple Helix Conference in Barcelona, Spain.

Strong focus

Strathclyde was up against Saarland University, Trinity College Dublin, Aston University and U.Porto in the category – but it was Strathclyde’s strong focus on four key goals under its Strathclyde Inspire entrepreneurship strategy that won the day:

  • Developing entrepreneurial mindsets: positioning entrepreneurship as a mindset and set of behaviours that can be adopted by all;
  • Identifying & supporting entrepreneurial talent: making entrepreneurial support services easily accessible – ensuring emerging innovators are aware of the practical entrepreneurship support available to them at Strathclyde;
  • Empowering entrepreneurs: providing access to innovation-led opportunities with an unrivalled package of support at the heart of Glasgow City Innovation District (Scotland’s first innovation district), accelerating them towards investment and growth;
  • Scaling innovation-driven enterprises: addressing the early-stage funding gap through significant expansion of investment capabilities.

Meryl Levington, Director of Innovation and Industry Engagement at Strathclyde, said: “This is a fantastic accolade and recognition for our institutional commitment to embedding entrepreneurship in everything we do at Strathclyde.

“The breadth and depth of activity undertaken by a huge range of staff at Strathclyde to support not just new business creation and growth, but an entrepreneurial mindset that permeates every aspect of our work as a University, is impressive and this was clearly recognised by the judges.”

Ambitious strategy

In September 2021, the University’s bold and ambitious strategy attracted the attention and the support of alumnus and global business leader, Dr Charles Huang through a £50m donation from his philanthropic foundation – one of the UK HE sector’s largest-ever gifts.

£30m of this gift will support the construction of a new building named after Dr Huang in the heart of Glasgow City Innovation District (GCID) which will house a new state-of-the-art Entrepreneurship Hub and become the focal point of Strathclyde Inspire on campus.

Another share is directly supporting the next generation of Strathclyde entrepreneurs through the creation of high-value Entrepreneurship Awards which have become a key component of Strathclyde Inspire. A third component funds two Chairs in Entrepreneurship which have attracted applications from leading business schools around the world.

Strathclyde joint 36th in the world in Times Higher University Impact Rankings

Fantastic news! Strathclyde is joint 36th in the world out of 1,591 universities, and joint 6th in the UK in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings which assess universities against the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Strathclyde is one of the world’s leading universities for addressing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), according to the Times Higher Education (THE).

THE’s Impact Rankings 2023 places Strathclyde at joint 36th in the world out of 1,591 universities, and joint 6thin the UK.

The rankings, now in their fifth year, are the first and only global performance tables that assess universities against the SDGs and focus on the dual issues of protecting the environment and addressing inequality through sustainable development.

Institutions submit data towards one compulsory category – SDG 17 Partnership for the Goals – and at least three further categories; Strathclyde submitted results for all 17 SDGs.

An institution’s overall ranking in the table is determined by the combined score of its three best-performing SDGs and the compulsory category.

Sustainability sits at the heart of Strathclyde’s Strategic Plan, Vision 2025, and makes a clear commitment to deliver against the SDGs across all areas of activity, including research, teaching and operational matters.

King Charles III bond to education is notable and this fact is proven in practice, since his visit to the country of Greece is dated back to 2018.

As far as the relationship existed between the University of Strathclyde and King Charles III, Professor Sir Jim McDonald, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Strathclyde, said:

“On behalf of the leadership, Court, Chancellor, staff and students of the University of Strathclyde, I welcome the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III as Monarch of the United Kingdom and Commonwealth, accompanied by his wife, Camilla, as Queen Consort.

“After the world mourned the passing of his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II, we now anticipate a future in which global events will bring great change and, at times, uncertainty. However, we are confident that, like his mother, the King will be a source of stability and continuity for the UK, the Commonwealth and the world at large.

“This change will also be full of opportunities and possibilities of a kind which the King has always been enthusiastic about such as tackling the effects of climate change, public health and creating an inclusive economy.  Seizing such opportunities will depend upon innovation, for advancement and for the broadening of horizons in science, engineering, industry, business, humanities, social sciences and the arts.

“At Strathclyde, these pursuits are central to our ambitions and values and we will continue to play our part in shaping and informing the world that will define the King’s reign. We hope that his reign will be long, peaceful and prosperous and that the day of his Coronation will be remembered with fondness.”

Coronation of King Charles III 8-5-2023

08 May 2023

People across the country and the Commonwealth were invited to celebrate the Coronation of Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla over a weekend of special events on 6–8 May 2023.

Britain’s King Charles III was officially crowned on Saturday 6th of May 2023 in a magnificent and deeply religious ceremony at Westminster Abbey.

The coronation — a symbolic coming together of the monarchy, church and state — was attended by dignitaries from around the world, and thousands of people gathered in London to take in all the pageantry. It was Britain’s first coronation in 70 years.

After the two-hour ceremony, Charles and his wife, Queen Camilla — who was also crowned — traveled back to Buckingham Palace in the Gold State Coach, which has been used in every coronation since 1831. Upon arrival, the king and queen later appeared on the palace’s iconic balcony. They were joined by fellow senior working members of the royal family, including Prince William, Princess Kate, Prince Edward, and Duchess Sophie. Their children—Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis of Wales, as well as James, Earl of Wessex, and Lady Louise—plus the pages of honor and Camilla’s ladies-in-attendance also attended.

On Sunday 7th of May 2023, thousands of events took place across the country as part of the “Coronation Big Lunch,” while Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Take That headlined the “Coronation Concert” at Windsor Castle in the evening.

Charles instantly became King in September 2022 when his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, died at the age of 96. She was the longest-reigning monarch in British history.
